DAY TRIPPER - John and Nicki invite you to come out for the day to explore art.
Back in 2019, John and Nicki invited people to join them for a day out exploring art. Commissioned by Magna Vitae, the trips were part of the wider SO Festival programme and were designed to offer enjoyable, inspiring experiences to people living along the Lincolnshire coast — including families who were financially struggling and might not otherwise have had the opportunity to take part in cultural activities.
John and Nicki firmly believed that a change is as good as a rest, and these day trips aimed to provide exactly that.
SO Why?
SO Festival has always aimed to make life more interesting by bringing out-of-the-ordinary experiences to the coast: fun, thought-provoking, and a welcome break from everyday life.
However, not everyone is able to join in. People may be too busy, too stressed, unsure what the festival is about — and it often comes and goes in a flash. For families facing financial pressures, taking part in events like these can be even more difficult.
The Day Trips in 2019 were created as a first step towards making stronger connections with coastal communities. They helped us learn more about what life was like for local residents, what could be improved, and what people hoped to see in the future. That insight supported plans for future projects and for building a more inclusive and accessible SO Festival.
We were grateful to everyone who came along in 2019 and hoped they enjoyed their day out. John and Nicki were there throughout — all yours for the day!

Hi, I’m John
I’ve lived in Skegness for 28 years and have three grown up girls, all ginger! :)
As a teenager and into my early twenties, I suffered from acute depression that left me hospitalised, and it was during this time that I discovered art as a therapy to help cope and reduce my anxieties.
Since those dark days, I’ve travelled extensively across Europe and beyond armed with a camera recording the world through my eyes.
I’ve had my ups and downs over the years and life has taught me a great many things. Sharing those experiences through art is a passion of mine and one that keeps me on the straight and narrow.
